
Getting Your Silk-Screen Tempering Just Right
If you’ve ever run an integrated tempering line after silk-screening, you know the headache. It’s a constant tug-of-war. You need enough heat to cure that ink and toughen the glass, but if you push it too hard? You end up burning your patterns or, worse, dealing with sheets that crack from thermal stress. It’s a frustrating spot to be in. We deal with this by using high-purity aluminum reflectors. Instead of letting heat wander, these reflectors point the IR radiation exactly where it needs to go: right onto the glass.
Why Aluminum Actually Works
Think about a standard IR lamp. It pushes heat out in every direction—360 degrees. Without a reflector, you’re basically wasting half your energy heating up the machine’s chassis. That’s just expensive air. We use polished aluminum for the housings because it’s incredible at bouncing infrared photons back toward the workpiece. The result? You get a much stronger heat flux on the glass without having to crank the lamp wattage to the max. It keeps the thermal profile tight. No more worrying about the edges overheating while the center is still cold.
Finding That Sweet Spot
The secret to a crisp pattern is the curing curve. When your IR intensity is all over the place, the ink starts to bleed or fade. It looks sloppy. By focusing the beam with aluminum, the ink hits that curing temperature fast and clean. But here’s the thing: because these reflectors are so efficient, they concentrate a lot of heat. If your conveyor is crawling or your lamps are spaced too close together, you’ll bake the silk-screened areas. You’ve got to dial in your line speed to match that extra heat density.
What This Means for Your Shop
On the floor, this actually makes life easier. Your power draw per square meter drops. Your cooling fans don’t have to work nearly as hard. In a lot of cases, once you switch to aluminum reflectors, you can actually lower your lamp power specs and still move the same amount of glass. It just stabilizes the whole process. Less guesswork, fewer mistakes, and way less scrap hitting the bin.
