
Why your old bathroom heater keeps dying (and what to use instead)
Ever notice how those standard bathroom lamp heaters always seem to burn out right when you need them most? It’s usually because they just aren’t built for the steam. They get soaked, they corrode, and eventually, they just quit. That’s why we’ve been moving toward high-waterproof infrared radiators. They actually handle the humidity and the occasional splash without throwing a fit or shorting out. The “Cold Shoulder” Problem Here is the thing about traditional heaters: they try to warm up the air. But warm air rises. So, while your ceiling is cozy, you’re still shivering at shoulder level. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air. Instead, it sends out waves that heat you—your skin, the floor, the walls. It’s instant. You step in, you feel the heat, and you’re good to go. No waiting around for the room to catch up. Staying Dry (and Safe) Most of those old-school heaters have tiny gaps in the housing. Steam sneaks in, hits the circuitry, and—pop—there goes your breaker. We use units with high IP ratings now. In plain English? The seals are tight. The moisture stays out of the electrical bits. It means you can take a steaming hot shower without worrying about the lights flickering or the power cutting out. A Few Things to Watch Out For We use quartz or halogen elements sealed in tempered glass. It’s a smart setup because it stops the heating element from rusting away in the damp air. They last way longer. But a heads-up: these things put out some serious, concentrated heat. If you mount them too low or too close to a plastic shelf, you might actually warp your fixtures. You’ve got to get the height right based on how powerful the unit is. The Setup The best part is that these usually just drop right into the holes where your old ceiling fixtures were. They actually put less stress on your electrical system than a bunch of old-style bulbs, but you get way more warmth. Just make sure your bathroom’s grounding is solid. These units pull a decent amount of power, so they need a clean path to keep everything safe.
