Dealing with the Steam
If you’ve never heard of IP65, it basically means the unit is tight enough to keep out dust and handle direct water jets. But in a bathroom, the real enemy is the steam. It finds every tiny crack. We use silicone gaskets and sealed cable glands to lock everything down. If moisture sneaks into those electrical terminals, you’ve got a ground fault on your hands. By sealing the junction points, we keep the guts of the machine bone-dry.
The “No-Shock” Strategy
We want to make sure the electricity stays exactly where it belongs. To do that, we use high-dielectric materials—think ceramic insulators and heat-resistant polymers—to keep the live parts far away from the outer shell. **Here is the secret:**we always use a grounded metal housing. If something does fail inside, we want the current to trip the breaker immediately. You don’t want the surface of your heater becoming “live” while you’re stepping out of the shower. We also run double-insulated cabling inside. It’s an extra safety net. If the primary insulation gets fried by the heat of the infrared tube, you’ve still got a backup layer protecting you.
The Trade-off
Here’s the thing about sealing a heater airtight: the heat has nowhere to go. It builds up inside the box. If you try to cram too many watts into a small IP65 shell, that internal heat will eventually eat away at your wiring. It’s a slow burn, but it happens. To avoid this, we suggest using low-wattage, high-efficiency shortwave lamps. They get the job done without turning the inside of the housing into an oven. And for the final layer of peace of mind? Wire it up to a GFCI. The IP65 shell stops the water from getting in, but the GFCI is there for the “what if” moments. It’s just smart.
