
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heater from Becoming a Hazard
Let’s be honest: putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit like playing a game of chicken with water. Between the steam from a hot shower and the occasional stray splash, you’ve got a recipe for disaster if you just throw a standard heater up on the wall. You need a setup where the electricity and the moisture never, ever shake hands.
Stopping the Leaks
The real battle is won or lost at the seal. Specifically, where the lamp housing meets the power leads. We lean heavily on high-temperature silicone gaskets and IP-rated enclosures. Why? Because moisture is sneaky. It creeps into terminals. And when water hits a live wire, you don’t get a “glitch”—you get a short circuit or a ground fault. Not a great way to start your morning. Then there’s the wiring. We use double-insulated cables because quartz tubes get incredibly hot. Standard wires would just crack or melt, leaving you exposed. When it comes time to wire it up, a waterproof gland in the junction box is a must. It stops moisture from literally sucking itself into the circuitry through capillary action.
The Right Stuff and a Safety Net
For the heating elements, we use ceramic insulators. They’re tough and they don’t care how humid the air gets; they just do their job. But we also plan for the “worst-case scenario.” The outer casing is grounded straight into the building’s earth system. If something does fail, the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) trips instantly. It’s the only way to actually feel safe when you’re standing in a shower.
The Trade-off
Here’s the catch: making things waterproof makes them bulky. An IP65 rated housing takes up more space. Plus, it tends to trap heat around the base of the lamp. If you aren’t careful, that heat can bake the seals until they get brittle and snap. Once those seals crack, your waterproof rating is basically gone. That’s why we make sure the housing has enough thermal mass or a solid heat sink to keep things cool. It keeps the seals flexible and, more importantly, keeps you safe.
