
Picking the Right Wattage for Your Bathroom Infrared Heater
If you’re putting an infrared heater in the bathroom, there’s one thing you can’t mess with: the IPX5 rating. It’s the gold standard. It basically means your heater can handle a stray spray of water from any direction without turning into a hazard. But once you’ve got the safety part sorted, the real trick is getting the wattage right. You don’t want to blast a tiny room with too much heat, but you also don’t want to be shivering while you wait for the warmth to kick in. Size matters here. You can’t just grab any lamp and hope for the best. A tiny powder room is a completely different beast than a huge master bath. For those small spaces, 400W to 600W usually does the trick. It gets you warm immediately without making the room feel like a sauna. If you’ve got a bigger space, you’ll probably need 800W or 1200W. But here’s a pro tip: instead of one massive, scorching lamp, try a few smaller ones. It stops those annoying “hot spots” and keeps the chilly corners at bay. Think about how the heat actually works. Infrared isn’t like a space heater that warms up the air. It warms you. It hits your skin and feels like a warm sunbeam. If you go overboard with the wattage, you’re basically paying to heat up your ceiling. Waste of money. On the flip side, if the wattage is too low, the lamp has to run way longer to get you warm, which wears out the filament faster. I always aim for that sweet spot where you feel cozy in under three minutes. A quick warning on the wiring. Higher wattage means more power pulling through your walls. You’ve got to make sure your circuit breakers can actually handle the load. A 1200W lamp is a lot heavier on your system than a 400W one.
